Beyond Oppression - November 3rd & 4th
with Professor Raja Labadi
During her two-day visit to UC Merced, International women's rights activist, professor, and scholar, Raja Labadi will participate in numerous events that will focus on women's history of repression and discrimination and their modes of resistance against the disempowering forces of culture and religion, especially in Muslim countries.

"Beyond the Veil: Women's Empowerment" Presentation & Reception
5 pm - California Room
Abstract: This talk examines the condition of women past and present, and their modes of resistance against the disempowering forces of culture and religion, especially strong in Muslim countries. It focuses on women’s history of repression and discrimination sanctioned and sustained by hard-line religious thinking as well as their struggle for individual and collective empowerment, their achievements and the obstacles still to be overcome.
